Fortnite OG Replays The Final Showdown on August 29, and the Devourer Is Waking Up Again

Fortnite players of a certain age just felt a shiver. Epic confirmed this weekend that the Devourer, the monster that crawled out of Polar Peak back in 2019, is waking up again, and this time the fight is happening in Fortnite OG. The official announcement reads "The Devourer stirs, and only the boldest heroes can stand against the coming darkness. Coming to OG August 29! Make sure you get in by 1:55 PM ET." The in game news screen goes a step further and names it outright: The Final Showdown, the same title as the original event.

That makes Saturday, August 29 at 2 PM ET the time to be online. The event runs inside the OG playlist, not the current Override season island, and not any of the Creative recreations floating around.

Why this fight matters

The original Final Showdown, staged in the summer of 2019 at the end of Chapter 1 Season 9, is arguably the most beloved live event Fortnite has ever run. The giant monster that had hatched from Polar Peak clashed with the Mecha Team Leader robot in front of players standing on the island in real time, and the fight ended with the mecha drawing power from the Zero Point and pulling a giant sword out of the island itself to finish the job. It was pure Saturday morning cartoon energy, and it set the template for every Fortnite spectacle since.

Fortnite OG has been rebuilding toward this moment all summer. The mode rewound the island to Season 9 in late June, bringing back Neo Tilted, Mega Mall and the Pressure Plant, which means the stage is already dressed exactly the way it was the first time. Rerunning the season's finale as a live event is the logical payoff, and for anyone who was too young, or not playing yet, in 2019, it is a rare chance to see a piece of Fortnite history instead of watching it on a seven year old video.

How to be there when it happens

The event is free and needs no pass or purchase. Our advice is the same as for every Fortnite live moment: log in early, because Epic's own messaging says to be in OG by 1:55 PM ET, and in practice queues start forming half an hour or more before showtime. If you miss it, Epic has not said anything about reruns, so treat it as a one time broadcast.

It also caps a very busy stretch for the game. The main Battle Royale island is deep into the season that launched with Sonic in the battle pass just over a week ago, and running a nostalgia driven spectacle alongside the crossover heavy Override season shows how comfortably Fortnite now serves two audiences at once.
