Almost exactly a year after Atsu first set out across Ezo, Sucker Punch has announced how Ghost of Yōtei grows next. A Complete Edition lands on PS5 on October 1 for $69.99, bundling the base game, the Legends co-op mode, the Digital Deluxe extras and two brand new pieces of content: a narrative expansion called Echoes of Sekigahara and a single player roguelike mode called Most Wanted.

The number that matters most, though, is $14.99. That is what the Complete Edition Upgrade costs if you already own the game, and it gets you both new modes. The date slips to October 2 in some territories, including Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Echoes of Sekigahara digs into Atsu's past

The expansion splits its story between two timelines. In the present, Atsu explores a previously unseen valley once held by The Snake and his gang of followers, the Vipers. In flashbacks, we finally get to play through her time on the mainland, including the Battle of Sekigahara itself, one of the most famous clashes in Japanese history and a moment the base game only ever talked about. Along the way she crosses paths with Nagato, a figure from her past.

Sucker Punch says the expansion brings new enemies, heavy weapons, armor sets and dyes. Anyone who has been waiting for a reason to return to Ezo should find plenty here, and if samurai action expansions are your thing, Team Ninja is playing in the same space with Nioh 3's Hell Rising DLC later this month.

Most Wanted is Sucker Punch's spin on a roguelike

The second half of the package might be the more interesting experiment. Most Wanted is a single player combat survival mode where you accept bounties to start runs, earn perks by taking down enemies, and unlock additional playable characters as you go. Three are confirmed so far: Atsu with her dual katana, Oyuki with the kusarigama, and Nagato with the yari.

Roguelike modes bolted onto big single player games have a strong recent track record, and a bounty structure fits this world naturally. We are curious how much build variety three characters and a perk system can sustain, but as part of a 15 dollar package it does not need to carry the whole load.

There is also a genuinely generous free layer. Patch v2.0 arrives for every owner on October 1 with a Beauty of Yōtei ambient mode, armor appearance customization so you can keep a look while using different stats, a high contrast accessibility option, new Watanabe Mode tracks, photo mode stamps, New Game+ cosmetics and fresh Trophies. Pre-order the paid content by September 30 and you unlock Jin Sakai's family armor from Ghost of Tsushima on day one. With this and Phantom Blade Zero's State of Play days away, PlayStation's autumn is filling up fast, and this upgrade is priced like Sony actually wants people to say yes.
