Marvel Rivals Season 9 Adds Jubilee and The Hood and Rebuilds Every Team-Up

Marvel Rivals has been running on a steady rhythm of new heroes and seasonal themes, and Season 9, called The Mystery of Thebes, might be its most ambitious swing yet. It went live on July 10 at 09:00 UTC, and instead of just bolting on a couple of characters, it rebuilds one of the systems that defines how the whole game plays. The official patch notes frame the season around a story titled Death of Apocalypse, a murder mystery set in an ancient Egyptian city, and the tone shift shows up everywhere from the map design to the cosmetics.

Two new heroes and a Black Widow rebuild

Season 9 brings in two characters. Jubilee arrives as a Strategist who uses pyrotechnic energy blasts to heal allies and damage enemies, which is a genuinely unusual kit for a support. The Hood joins alongside her, leaning into the season's darker, occult flavor. On top of the new faces, Black Widow gets a full rework, the kind of ground up rebuild that can pull a long ignored character straight back into the meta. If you main her, it is worth relearning her from scratch rather than assuming your old habits still apply.

The Team-Up system gets torn down and rebuilt

The bigger story is the Team-Up overhaul. Marvel Rivals has always sold itself on hero pairings that unlock special abilities, and this season the developers rebuilt that system with brand new Team-Up abilities, fresh dialogue and new character interactions. That is not a small tuning pass. It changes which duos are worth running, which means the team compositions that dominated Season 8 are not guaranteed to carry over. Expect the first couple of weeks to feel unsettled while players figure out the new combinations.

Thebes and the mid-season map

The season is themed around Apocalypse and the city of Thebes, and a new Convoy map based on Thebes is set to arrive in the mid-season update on July 23. There is also a detective style event tied to the Death of Apocalypse storyline, letting players piece together the mystery rather than just grind matches. The Season 9 Battle Pass carries ten costumes, including looks for Deadpool, Elsa Bloodstone and Rocket Raccoon.

The two new heroes are the headline, but the Team-Up rework is what actually matters here. Adding characters is routine now. Rebuilding a core system mid life cycle is a real risk, and it signals that the team is willing to shake up its own meta instead of letting it stagnate. We like that. The Egyptian murder mystery framing is a fun change of pace too, even if the story mode is more flavor than substance. If you drifted away over the last season, this is a natural moment to come back and relearn the game. Just do not expect your old Team-Up muscle memory to survive the transition.
