The Pokémon World Championships wrapped up in San Francisco on Sunday night, and the closing ceremony did what it does best: it buried the trophy talk under a pile of announcements. Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company, walked on stage after the finals and touched nearly every corner of the franchise, from Champions and TCG Pocket to a new animated movie and next year's host city.

Champions gets Z Mega Evolutions on September 9

The biggest gaming news is dated and close. Pokémon that can undergo Z Mega Evolution debut in Pokémon Champions on September 9, 2026, led by Mega Lucario Z, Mega Garchomp Z and Mega Absol Z. Rillaboom and Baxcalibur, two staples of the competitive scene, join the roster the same day, and Mega Heatran was revealed with no date attached yet.

It is a smart place to put the firepower. Champions is the game that will carry the Worlds competitive banner going forward, and stocking it with the series' flashiest battle mechanic a week and a half after the event keeps the momentum honest.

TCG Pocket, GO and Unite all walked away with something

Pokémon TCG Pocket picks up dual-type Pokémon cards starting in October 2026, a first for the app and a mechanic longtime card players have been asking about since launch. The hero art for the ceremony even flashed a Mega Mewtwo ex card with a dual-type attack, so the design work is clearly further along than the vague date suggests. We covered the app's last big swing when Mega Rayquaza ex headlined Ruler of the Skies, and this sounds like a bigger structural change than another expansion.

Pokémon GO is expanding Mega Evolution into every level of the GO Battle League, and Mega-Evolved Pokémon gain an exclusive third Charged Attack when the change lands during GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale in early September. Pokémon Unite got four new fighters: Morpeko and Toxtricity in September, then Jolteon and Flareon in October, which completes the full set of Eeveelutions. The bittersweet note is that this Worlds was Unite's last as a championship event after five years on the program. Zeta Division closed that chapter by beating Komai 3 to 1 in the grand finals.

A movie, an Aardman series and a trip to Singapore

The franchise news was just as dense. Pokémon: Wild Card is a new feature-length animated film starring a TCG player and Mimikyu, the first new Pokémon movie in seven years. Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch'd and Pichu, the stop-motion series from Aardman, confirmed Disney+ as its exclusive worldwide streaming home. The physical card game teased a new ex★ series logo alongside first looks at Mega Lucario Z ex and Sigilyph ex.

And the final surprise: the 2027 Pokémon World Championships move to the Singapore EXPO on August 13 to 15, the event's first visit to Singapore and its return to Asia.
